A recent study published in the British Medical Journal (BJ) shows that patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) who use PPIs have an increased risk of heart attacks and stroke, according to a new study.
According to the JAMA International Network on Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke (JINP), in the year 2019, nearly one-third of those who used PPIs were prescribed Nexium (esomeprazole), a prescription drug used to treat GERD.
Nexium was originally developed as a heartburn remedy by the American Heart Association (AHA) but was quickly found to be safe and effective at reducing heartburn symptoms.
The JINP study involved 1,926 patients who had had at least one episode of heartburn or other heartburn-related symptoms from the previous year. The participants were randomly assigned to continue treatment with PPIs for 7 days or to switch to a different drug at a later date.
The study showed that patients who took PPIs for 7 days had a 40 percent greater risk of death from any cause compared to those who continued with the same treatment.
In addition to the heartburn and acid reflux symptoms, the study also found that those who used PPIs had an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and hospitalization for heart failure, according to the JINP.
According to the JINP, PPIs can cause serious stomach pain, bloating, and heartburn, as well as other gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
The JINP is the scientific title of the JAMA International Network on Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke.
Nexium, available to buy online from pharmacies in Australia, New Zealand, the U. S., and Canada, is a prescription drug that has been used for over 60 years to treat heartburn and acid reflux. The JINP study was presented at the American Heart Association Annual Scientific Sessions in June 2019.
Dr. Emily Carter, a gastroenterologist at the JINP, said, “Our research shows that a combination of PPIs and diet can significantly reduce heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms associated with GERD.”
According to the JINP, a combination of PPIs and diet can significantly reduce heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms associated with GERD.
Carter said that there are multiple mechanisms involved in this. For example, PPIs increase the levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which is the main ingredient in acid reflux medications.
One theory is that PPIs reduce cGMP production, increasing the levels of gastric acid in the stomach.
A second theory is that PPIs increase gastric acid production and, consequently, the amount of stomach acid needed to heal the damaged esophagus.
It is important for patients to be aware of the possible adverse effects of PPIs and to follow a diet that contains a low-sodium diet, such as low-sodium bread or low-sodium pasta.
Carter said that the results of the study show that the PPIs used for heartburn and acid reflux can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and other adverse events in people who take PPIs.
The JINP was led by Dr. Thomas A. Adams, MD, of the University of Sydney, and his research team analyzed data from more than 1,700 patients who had recently had heartburn or other heartburn-related symptoms.
